Squashcannon:progression to make contact with the ball for kids starting out
- Player Age:
in this drill kids are taught to hit the ball consistently
in order to be able to hit the ball, kids need to learn to correctly judge it, catching does that.
first exercise is to catch the ball after one bounce, initially with 2 hands then with one hand
have them catch it with both the preferred and non-preferred hands
use a plastic cup with a handle to catch the ball, I am a big fan of the cup as kids grip something like a racquet and it is some distance away from their hand
kids will learn to track the bounce of the ball and move their feet to the appropriate position
encourage kids to move their feet to better be able to catch the ball
kids need sufficient distance to the ball, should start in a sideways position with the racquet ready
initially there is little movement involved, see how many shots they can hit back onto the front wall
get them into a sideways position, square to the sidewall, as quickly as possible
add some movement, recovering back to the T in between every shot
having the racquet already prepared or hitting the ball on the second bounce will help with beeing successfully connecting with the ball
increase difficulty with faster balls, less time inbetween shots or different feeds like shots coming off the sidewall or
using targets to hit the ball into
